Sizing a boiler for this county means accounting for a burner and ignition system that cycles hard through a long, continuous stretch of cold months. Homes in Hillsborough County, NH run heat about eight months a year, from October through May. The heat exchanger and burner assembly carry that load month after month, and a unit that was undersized at installation runs longer and harder each cycle to meet demand. A contractor quoting a new boiler here has to establish the actual heat loss of the house before committing to equipment, because an undersized spec written anywhere else shows its flaw here first.

Ductwork laid down for an earlier generation of heating does not automatically carry a modern boiler's distribution requirements, and in much of this county that gap between the original installation and the new one is where the job gets complicated. Half the homes in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire were built in 1978 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a boiler replacement has to pull access and measure the existing runs before the equipment selection means anything, because ductwork sized for a different load can force a reroute that changes the whole scope of the job.

What a Boiler Installation Covers

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-storey house showing a wall-mounted boiler with a flue connected by orange pipes to radiators in several furnished rooms under a dark shingled roof.

The boiler itself sits in a utility space, most often a basement or mechanical room, and is the unit that heats water and sends it through the system. A contractor installs the heat exchanger, burner assembly, and controls as a single unit. The expansion tank, which keeps pressure in the system stable, mounts close by.

From the boiler, supply and return pipes run through the house to the heat emitters, whether those are radiators, baseboard units, or in-floor loops. A circulator pump, mounted on the return line, moves the heated water through that circuit. A pressure relief valve and an aquastat also go in at this stage as part of the boiler assembly.

Licensing Rules for Hillsborough County, New Hampshire

New Hampshire's mechanical licensing board issues nine credentials — hearth system, four fuel gas endorsements, domestic appliance technician, and master, journeyman and apprentice plumber — and a licensee may not work outside the specialty their licence names. None of the nine is an HVAC licence.

New Hampshire does not license HVAC as a trade, and says so where it matters: the plumbing licence expressly does not reach a person installing heating, cooling, air conditioning or domestic water heating systems, whether solar, oil, gas or electric. The gas piping on a gas-fired system is a separate matter and needs a fuel gas fitter licence.

Severe Weather Events in Hillsborough County

Heating equipment in Hillsborough County works against whatever the climate throws at it, and local weather patterns shape how hard that work gets. A boiler sized and installed for this area accounts for those conditions in ways a generic spec does not.
