Sizing a boiler correctly for a house in Rockingham County is not a generic calculation a contractor can pull from a chart. Homes in Rockingham County, NH run heat about eight months a year, from October through May. The burner and heat exchanger in a boiler here cycle through the cold months with little rest, so stress accumulates on those components in direct proportion to how well the original install matched the building's actual load. A system that runs slightly hard each season reaches its failure points early. Contractors quoting a replacement here scope the venting, the heat exchanger surface, and the distribution piping before they commit to a unit size, because an undersized replacement repeats the same damage pattern on new equipment.

Existing ductwork and plumbing layout shape a boiler installation more than the unit itself. Half the homes in Rockingham County, New Hampshire were built in 1983 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Stock of that vintage was built around equipment that has since been replaced at least once, and the rough-in that made sense for one generation of heating may not serve the next. A contractor here measures what the house already carries before the new equipment is ever priced.

What a Boiler Installation Covers

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-storey house showing a wall-mounted boiler with a flue through the roof, orange pipes running through rooms to several radiators, and simple grey furniture.

The boiler itself sits in a mechanical room, basement, or utility closet and is the unit a contractor replaces or places new. It fires on gas, oil, or electricity to heat water, which then moves out through the rest of the system. This is the largest piece of the job and the one that anchors everything else.

From the boiler, copper or PEX piping runs through the house to the heat emitters, which are either radiators standing against walls or in-floor radiant loops set into the subfloor. A circulator pump, mounted close to the boiler, pushes the heated water through those pipes. An expansion tank and pressure relief valve sit nearby and keep the closed loop safe to run.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to this house.

Licensing Rules for HVAC Work in Rockingham County, New Hampshire

New Hampshire's mechanical licensing board issues nine credentials — hearth system, four fuel gas endorsements, domestic appliance technician, and master, journeyman and apprentice plumber — and a licensee may not work outside the specialty their licence names. None of the nine is an HVAC licence.

New Hampshire does not license HVAC as a trade, and says so where it matters: the plumbing licence expressly does not reach a person installing heating, cooling, air conditioning or domestic water heating systems, whether solar, oil, gas or electric. The gas piping on a gas-fired system is a separate matter and needs a fuel gas fitter licence.
